GPS off-road tour book Geiterdörfer Northern Spain
Book including data download
Description from Sabine and Burkhard:
For this GPS OFF-ROAD tour book, we spent two months on adventurous slopes in northern Spain in our Land Rover. We looked for abandoned, uninhabited villages that had fallen into disrepair. The result is a total of 33 off-road routes to 40 “ghost” villages in remote regions of the foothills of the Pyrenees. We drove and described each route ourselves. 33 detailed off-road route descriptions and the associated waypoint lists await you in this 4×4 tour book. We drive along the mountain ridge with impressive views, reach lonely ruins in deep forests, with the opportunity to spend the night far away from civilization. Information about the history and village life at the time rounds off the 4×4 tour book. The tour book is supplemented with tips for off-road driving and navigation.
A level of difficulty (SG) is indicated for each route, which makes it easier to make your own assessment in conjunction with the vehicle classes (FZK). We evaluated the routes in the form of stars, which incorporated our impression of driving fun, scenic beauty and experience value. These stars are of course very subjective.
Data download
With the data download you get:
- all GPS tracks and waypoints (GPX)
There are two subfolders in the “GPS data” folder. These contain duplicate track and waypoint lists for each off-road route. On the one hand as a kml file for display on Google Earth and as a gpx file, the exchange format for all navigation programs and GPS devices.
In the summer months, AT tires are sufficient for driving on the 4×4 slopes, for many slopes NO all-wheel drive is required, but short overhangs on the vehicle and some ground clearance are required. Many of the off-road routes can also be driven on with larger 4×4 trucks. There are very few height and weight limits. Overall, the routes in northern Spain can be classified as easy to moderately difficult, which makes them ideal for off-road beginners.
33 routes, of which 21 are for FZK 3, of which 15 are for FZK 4
In midsummer, 21 routes can also be driven without four-wheel drive. However, ground clearance, good approach and ramp angles are required. This means that the routes can be driven, for example, with short transporters without underfloor tanks etc. with appropriate caution.

Sabine and Burkhard, both born in 1965, have been traveling together since they were 16. On one of her first trips, the desire to be independent of time and to live mobile arose. They have been modern nomads since 2004: They traveled with their snow groomer around Africa and the Middle East for a few years, drove overland to India and lived in a Land Cruiser in Australia for two years. They have covered around 600,000 km in more than 80 countries in various four-wheel drive vehicles. They document their travel experiences in films, lectures and books.
